Founded in 1863, the Hospital for Special Surgery is the oldest orthopedic hospital in the United States, where more than 25,000 surgical procedures are performed each year. This year, the 205-bed hospital ranked No. 1 in the country for orthopedics by U.S. News & World Report. It offers an array of services as well as a number of specialized centers, such as the Center for Hip Preservation and the Children and Adolescent Hand and Arm Center. HSS also includes an innovation center, which supports the creation of solutions in musculoskeletal care that improve clinical outcomes and care delivery. In 2013, HSS was designated as the first National Medical Center of the United States Olympic Committee's National Medical Network, and it is the first hospital in New York State to receive Magnet recognition from the American Nurses Credentialing Center three consecutive times.
