UC San Diego Health. UC San Diego Health's Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center opened in 2011 as the first comprehensive heart hospital in San Diego dedicated to specialized cardiac care. The 128,000-square-foot facility includes four stories and 54 patient beds in addition to four operating rooms and an emergency department. Surgeons at the hospital perform many of the most difficult cardiac surgeries, including the heterotopic heart transplantation, in which the patient's heart remains in place while the donor heart is implanted. U.S. News & World Report ranked UC San Diego Medical Center among the top 50 hospitals in the nation for cardiology and heart surgery in 2017.
