UPMC (Pittsburgh). UPMC is a nonprofit health system with more than 60,000 employees and more than 20 academic, community and specialty hospitals. The UPMC Heart and Vascular Institute provides care for nearly all cardiovascular conditions. UPMC also has a clinical artificial heart program, operated with the health system's McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine. The program, founded in 1985, is staffed by cardiac surgeons, cardiologists, clinical nurses and bioengineers. In the program's first year, UPMC surgeons became the second team in the nation to implant the Jarvik Artificial Heart as a bridge-to-transplantation. U.S. News & World Report ranked UPMC second in Pennsylvania and No. 30 in the United States in cardiology and heart surgery for 2015-16.
