Rush University Medical Center (Chicago). Rush University Medical Center was established with Rush Medical College, which received its charter in 1837, just two days before the city of Chicago was officially incorporated. Today, the medical center has more than 400 full- and part-time physicians on staff and is the preferred provider for the Chicago Bulls NBA team.
Rush is a 664-bed hospital, which includes the Johnston R. Bowman Health Center, its 376-bed Tower hospital building and the Rush Orthopedic Building. "The Tower," as it is called, opened in 2012 and earned LEED Gold certification in recognition of commitment to green design, construction and operation.
U.S. World & News Report nationally ranked the hospital in nine of 16 specialties. The medical center was noted as high-performing in an additional four specialties and is regarded as the No. 2 hospital in Illinois by the publication. Rush has been named a Magnet hospital for excellence in nursing three times, first in 2002 and again in 2006 and 2010.
Rush University Medical Center is involved in a number of community outreach programs. Physicians, nurses, staff and medical students participate in local clinics and health programs to provide services such as primary care, exams, immunizations and eye screenings. Rush also spends millions each year to support research efforts.
Rush University Medical Center recently launched a program that connects veterans to health IT training. The program provides a valuable career service for those who have defended our country and also meets a need for qualified IT staffers in the healthcare industry.
