Inova Fairfax Hospital (Falls Church, Va.). Inova Fairfax Hospital, Inova Health System's flagship hospital, opened its doors in 1961 with 96 beds. The hospital has since grown to an 833-bed regional medical center and teaching facility — and a birthplace to tens of thousands of babies each year.
The Magnet-recognized, nonprofit Inova Fairfax includes northern Virginia's only Level I trauma center, which sees about 3,000 trauma codes and consults per year. U.S. News & World Report ranked Inova Fairfax Hospital as the No. 1 hospital in the Washington, D.C., metro area in its 2013-14 edition of hospital rankings, and the hospital secured a spot from the publication as one of the country's top 20 hospitals for gynecology. Inova Fairfax is also home to one of the busiest obstetrics programs in the country, delivering more than 10,000 babies each year and specializing in care for high-risk pregnancies.
Inova Fairfax has a robust organ transplantation program, in which physicians provide heart, lung, kidney, pancreas and bone marrow transplant services. The first heart transplant in the region was performed at the hospital's transplant center. The hospital is changing with the times, as well. In June 2010, Inova broke ground on the first phase of an $850 million expansion of its medical campus, which is scheduled to be complete in 2016.
