Hospital for Special Surgery (New York City). Established in 1863 as a hospital to treat impoverished children with disabilities related to musculoskeletal diseases, the Hospital for Special Surgery is the oldest orthopedic hospital in the nation. Each year, more hip surgeries and knee replacement procedures are performed at HSS than any other hospital in the country.
HHS was the first hospital in New York City to receive Magnet designation for nursing excellence from the American Nurses Credentialing Center, and it is also the first hospital in the state to be re-designated as a Magnet hospital. U.S. News & World Report ranked HHS as the No. 1 hospital in the nation for orthopedics and as the No. 4 hospital for rheumatology for 2013-14. The hospital has been nationally ranked by the publication for both specialties for 23 consecutive years.
Physicians at HSS are extremely experienced, as the surgeons who specialize in joint replacement perform an average of 365 of those operations every year. HSS' physicians serve as team physicians and athletic trainers for dozens of athletes and professional teams, including the New York Knicks, New York Giants, USA Swimming and more.
