Baptist Memorial Hospital – Memphis opened to the public in 1979, and during the course of the past 35 years, the hospital has become of the highest-volume facilities in Tennessee with roughly 27,000 discharges and 55,000 emergency department visits every year.
Baptist Memphis is a 642-bed teaching hospital and flagship of 14-hospital Baptist Memorial Health Care — the largest nonprofit healthcare system in the greater Memphis area. Baptist Memphis has garnered several awards from Healthgrades, including excellence awards for gastrointestinal care, cardiac surgery and prostatectomy. The Baptist Heart Institute is housed at Baptist Memphis. The facility is one of Tennessee's top-rated heart surgery programs, according to Healthgrades.
Baptists Memphis was the first hospital in the United States where physicians performed the radial brachytherapy procedure. Other achievements for the hospital include being the first hospital in the mid-South to perform coronary artery bypass surgery. For the past 17 years, Baptist Memphis has won a Consumer Choice award, and for the past five years, readers of The Commercial Appeal voted the hospital their most preferred hospital in the city.
