About half of the nation's hospitals are eyeing more control of the medical supply chain, according to a survey sample involving 250 hospital and health system leaders.
Among the respondents in the survey conducted by L.E.K. Consulting, 45 percent said they currently own or lease warehousing and "engage in self-distribution." More are planning to broaden their warehousing capabilities in the next three years, and 50 percent said they currently or soon plan to invest in consolidated service centers.
In addition to this, about 60 percent of "progressive" and 50 percent of "traditionalist" hospitals said there's a moderate to high likelihood of working with outsourced supply partners.
