Medline has recalled two models of its Bed Assist Bars portable bed rails after receiving reports of two patient deaths, the company said May 30.
The recall applies to 1.5 million units sold in the U.S. since 2009. Medline said the portable bed rails pose a risk of entrapment and asphyxia, as users may become caught within the rail or between the rail and the mattress.
The company has received reports of two entrapment deaths tied to the bed rails since 2019 involving residents at a nursing facility in Iowa and a residential care facility in South Carolina.
Customers should stop using the recalled bed rails immediately and contact Medline for a full refund, the company said.
