In the past decade, the FDA has authorized nearly 70 augmented reality and virtual reality devices that have been incorporated in healthcare use.
The agency updated the list Sept. 6 and has highlighted the transformative potential of using augmented reality and virtual reality in the industry.
According to the FDA, AR and VR technology offers immersive and real-time content delivery to enable physicians, patients and caregivers to perform medical procedures remotely or in clinical settings.
AR and VR treatments are being used in surgery, mental health treatments and rehabilitation. The FDA also emphasized that the technology could help increase access to healthcare for underserved populations.
At the same time, the agency expressed caution with respect to potential risks of the technology, including cybersickness, neck strain and privacy concerns.
