The interim president of Bangor-based Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center is turning his sights on quality ratings after the second-largest hospital in Maine received a C from Leapfrog and two stars from CMS, according to the Bangor Daily News.
EMMC performed worse than any hospital in the state on Leapfrog's ratings, and is one of five Maine hospitals that have two stars from CMS. The ratings are down from the last four years, when EMMC got Bs and an A from Leapfrog.
Interim president Timothy Dentry, who is also COO of EMMC's Brewer, Maine-based umbrella company Northern Light Health, said the latest ratings don't reflect changes the hospital has made in the last year, since the ratings consider 2018 data.
But as EMMC prepares to welcome its new president Dec. 9, Mr. Dentry said the hospital will continue implementing initiatives that aim to improve things like staff responsiveness, surgical complications and hospital-acquired infections — all of which were noted as poor performance marks by Leapfrog.
Rand O'Leary becomes EMMC's new leader Dec. 9. Northern Light said he was chosen in part because of his focus on hospital quality.
