Wisconsin hospital improves patient safety after suspended nurse charged with abuse in NICU

After a suspended nurse at Madison, Wis.-based UnityPoint Health-Meriter Hospital was charged with abusing patients in the neonatal intensive care unit, the hospital has taken several steps to improve patient safety, WMTV reports.

Those improvements include:

  • Immediately removing a NICU employee from care
  • Implementing 24/7 video monitoring in NICU patient rooms
  • Reviewing and updating procedures for reporting abuse
  • Requiring additional education for all patient care staff
  • Conducting audits
  • Using tracking tools to more closely monitor patient trends

"We know this has been a difficult journey for our patients, their families, our employees who serve them and our community" hospital officials said. "As an organization, we will work diligently to earn back your trust."
