Who is most at-risk for infection after prostate biopsy?

A recent study of prostate biopsy outcomes in Swedish men found two main risk factors contribute to the likelihood of men developing an infection after the biopsy — a history of urinary tract infections and significant comorbidities.

Researchers performed a population-based study of 51,321 men who underwent ultrasound-guided prostate biopsies between 2006 and 2011. The outcome measures examined were dispensed antibiotic prescription for a UTI and hospitalization with a discharge diagnosis of urinary tract infection.

They found that 6 percent of the men were dispensed an antibiotic prescription for a UTI and 1 percent were hospitalized with infection.

The risk of post-biopsy infection was highest in men with a history of UTIs and those with significant comorbidities or diabetes, according to the study.
