Larger clinics and those with a lower proportion of African Americans are more likely to enroll in quality improvement programs, according to an article in the Journal for Healthcare Quality.

Researchers explored the uptake of quality improvement practices through a study of outpatient addiction treatment clinics and the Network for the Improvement of Addiction Treatment's 18-month quality improvement intervention.

Among clinics that ended up enrolling in the NIATx quality improvement program, predictors of continued participation included not having a hospital affiliation, being privately owned and having staff who perceived management support for quality improvement efforts.

Researchers concluded organizational culture is vital to the success of quality improvement efforts.
