Weekend Admissions Tied to Higher Risk of Mortality

Patients who are admitted to a hospital on a weekend day may be at higher risk of mortality, according to research published in the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine.

For this study, researchers analyzed outcomes for more than 14 million admissions to the English National Health Service from 2009-2010. They found patients who were admitted on weekend days were at a considerably higher risk of death compared to patients admitted on weekdays. However, they also found hospitals stays on weekends were associated with a lower risk of mortality than midweek days.

The researchers concluded while weekend admissions are associated with a higher risk of mortality within 30 days, patients are even more likely to die in the middle of the week.
