Utah reports 1st flu death of season

The Southwest Utah Public Health Department confirmed Jan. 7 the state's first flu-related death of the 2019-20 season.

The adult had influenza type A and was under age 65.

"We have had 36 people hospitalized from the flu this season," Kassidy Peterson, an epidemiologist with the health department, said in the news release. "Their ages range from infants to the elderly. It's not too late to get vaccinated and we urge everyone to do so."

As of Dec. 28, flu activity has been elevated for eight consecutive weeks, sickening about 6.4 million people and killing 2,900 this season, the CDC reports.
