The United States has pledged $800 million to the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization to help the nonprofit reach its goal of vaccinating 300 million children in low-income countries against potentially fatal diseases, according to an NPR report.
GAVI asked for funding at a conference in Berlin on Tuesday and was met with an overwhelming response. Listed below are the new pledges to GAVI for vaccination programs from 2016 to 2020.
- United Kingdom — $1.6 billion
- Norway — $969 million
- United States — $800 million
- Germany — $720 million
- Canada — $441 million
- Netherlands — $300 million
- European Commission — $240 million
- France — $212 million
- Sweden — $206 million
- Australia — $206 million
- Italy — $120 million
- Saudi Arabia — $25 million
- Ireland — $18 million
- Qatar — $10 million
- Luxembourg — $5 million
- China — $5 million
- Oman — $3 million
- India — $1 million
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation also made a sizeable pledge to GAVI, amounting to nearly $1.6 billion.
