New Castle, Pa.-based UPMC Jameson hospital has notified 211 patients about a potential health risk stemming from exposure to ultrasound probes that were improperly cleaned, according to a WPXI news report.
An internal quality assurance review found that some hospital staff had not followed or documented proper cleaning procedures for certain wands used in internal prostate and OB-GYN exams.
Hospital officials called the health risks "extremely low" but are offering free blood and urine testing to potentially affected patients out of an abundance of caution.
"UPMC Jameson is committed to providing high-quality care in the safest environment possible," reads a hospital statement. "We apologize for the concern and inconvenience this matter has caused our patients and their families."
