The U.S. Department of Agriculture will fund a project at the University in Minnesota in Minneapolis examining ways to combat antibiotic-resistant bacteria, according to a Minnesota Public Radio report.
Researchers at the university will monitor the bacteria carried by chicken and turkeys and feed them antibiotics so they can test for resistance. Poultry is one of the main ways bacteria that can affect human health enters the environment.
The researchers expect the study — which will be funded by the $2 million grant from the government for three years — will help veterinarians better understand which antibiotics to give to animals and how much.
