Although the end of the Ebola outbreak may be in sight for some countries like Liberia, the United Nations has announced it needs another $1 billion in donations to continue fighting the deadly virus, according to a Bloomberg report.
UN Special Envoy on Ebola David Nabarro stated in a brief that the donations are needed for UNICEF, the World Food Programme and the World Health Organization. Funds would help relief workers cover a large geographic region to find individuals infected with the virus and treat them.
Mr. Nabarro also reminded the public that a great deal of work is left to be done because a single case of the virus could reignite the epidemic, a sentiment Tom Frieden, MD, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, echoed in a Bloomberg Television interview.
"We can't let down our guard," said Dr. Frieden. "We have to get over the finish line and then learn from this experience to build better systems so that it doesn't get out of control the next time [an infectious disease epidemic occurs]."
