The Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project has released a report identifying the conditions with the largest number of adult hospital readmissions sorted by payer type in 2011.
Overall, there were approximately 3,300,000 all-cause 30-day readmissions across all payer types. Medicare patients accounted for 1,800,000 readmissions, Medicaid patients experienced 700,000 readmissions, privately insured patients experienced 600,000 readmissions and uninsured patients experienced 200,000 readmissions.

Here are the top 10 conditions with the most all-cause 30-day readmissions for uninsured patients in 2011, listed in descending order by total number of readmissions.
1. Maintenance chemotherapy; radiotherapy — 25,500
2. Mood disorders — 19,600
3. Surgical, medical complications — 18,000
4. Complication of device; implant or graft — 16,900
5. Septicemia (except in labor) — 12,700
6. Diabetes mellitus with complications — 12,700
7. Secondary malignancies — 12,000
8. Early or threatened labor — 11,300
9. Pancreatic disorders (not diabetes) — 11,000
10. Coronary atherosclerosis, other heart disease — 10,800
