Syracuse mumps outbreak could top 18 cases

Onondaga County Health Department officials on Wednesday said the number of mumps cases among students at Syracuse (N.Y.) University could exceed 18, according to a report from Syracuse.com.

Officials have confirmed 13 cases linked to the outbreak. Five probable cases and more than 10 suspected cases still require further testing for confirmation. Most of the students affected were previously vaccinated.

The mumps are best known for painful, swollen salivary glands that cause puffy cheeks and swollen jaw. It is a highly contagious illness transmitted by person-to-person contact and is typically accompanied by initial symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle aches, tiredness and loss of appetite.
