A patient admitted to Uppsala University Hospital in Sweden for a suspected Ebola infection tested negative for the virus, reports Reuters.
The young man first sought treatment at a hospital in Enköping, a city about 50 miles from Stockholm. The hospital temporarily closed its emergency room and is monitoring staff members who had contact with the patient.
The patient was transferred to Uppsala University Hospital and is now in isolation. The man recently returned from a three-week trip to Burundi and demonstrated classic symptoms of Ebola, such as vomiting blood, Uppsala University Hospital's CMO told The Guardian.
The Democratic Republic of Congo, which shares a border with Burundi, is facing its second worst Ebola outbreak in history. As of Dec. 31, health officials reported 602 Ebola cases linked to the outbreak, including 366 confirmed and probable deaths.
Health officials also ruled out Marburg virus and dengue fever, but said additional testing is required to identify the man's illness.
