Study: Oral Antibiotics May Help Eradicate CRE

An oral antibiotic treatment with nonabsorbable drugs may help eradicate Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae colonization, according to a study published in the American Journal of Infection Control.

Researchers administered one of three oral antibiotics regimes to patients who were CRE carriers. Patients receiving no antibiotics composed the control group and were being evaluated for spontaneous eradication.

The rate of spontaneous eradication was 7 percent in the control group, while the rate of eradication using oral antibiotics was between 37.5 and 50 percent.

The study suggests oral antibiotics with nonabsorbable drugs may be a safe and effective way to eliminate CRE colonization.
