The Care Management Institute at Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente effectively used videos of patient and provider interactions to identify opportunities to improve patient-centered care, according to a study in Health Affairs.
Kaiser's video ethnography program involved taping interviews with and observations of patients and caregivers. This intervention helped the Care Management Institute communicate to healthcare providers and administrative leaders areas to target for to improve patient-centered care.
In one hospital, video ethnography helped reduce 30-day hospital readmission rates from 13.6 percent to 9 percent in six months.
