Study: Hospitalist Presence Associated With Reduced Readmissions

The presence of hospitalist physicians at hospitals is associated with lower readmissions rates for three conditions tracked by CMS, according to an article published in The Journal of Hospital Medicine.

Researchers examined 30-day mortality and 30-day readmission data from CMS for heart failure, heart attack and pneumonia. While the presence of hospitalists was not associated with differential mortality rates, hospitals that employ hospitalists had significantly lower readmissions rates for all three conditions.
