Study: Hospital at Home Program Generated 19% Savings

A "Hospital at Home" model generated 19 percent savings compared with costs for similar inpatients, according to a study in Health Affairs.

Albuquerque, New Mexico–based Presbyterian Healthcare Services implemented the Hospital at Home model developed by the Johns Hopkins University Schools of Medicine and Public Health to provide acute hospital-level care within patients' homes. In the program, which is available to Medicare Advantage and Medicaid patients with common acute-care diagnoses, physicians visit patients daily, nurses visit once or twice daily and telehealth nurses provide additional support.

The researchers studied Hospital at Home patients from Jan. 1, 2009 through Dec. 31, 2010. They found that the Hospital at Home patients had similar or better clinical outcomes and higher satisfaction levels than comparable hospital inpatients.

The 19 percent savings for Hospital at Home patients were primarily due to lower average length of stay and fewer lab and diagnostic tests than similar inpatients, according to the study.
