Clinical effectiveness among several common skin antiseptic agents used to prevent surgical site infections is about equal, according to an article in Journal of the American College of Surgeons
Researchers studied the incidence of several groups of surgical patients, nearly 7,700 patients in total, who were prepped with chlorhexidine, chlorhexidine in isopropyl alcohol, povidone-iodine or iodine-povacrylex in isopropyl alcohol.

Researchers concluded that because all commonly-used, tested skin preparation agents have comparably equal effectiveness, hospitals and surgical clinics might consider purchasing the least-expensive preparatory agent.
