Social factors, such as depression and lack of social networking, could increase stroke patients' risk of hospital readmission, according to a Cardiovascular Business report.
Researchers analyzed 700 stroke patients who received post-acute inpatient rehabilitation between 2005 and 2006. They found 18 percent of the study patients were readmitted to the hospital and were more likely to show "hints of depression" and lack social support. Outcomes from this study support previous literature that suggests patients' social factors can impact readmission and mortality rates.
