Nurses with sleep deficits are more likely to experience regret after making clinical decisions than are nurses who are well-rested, according to a study in the American Journal of Critical Care.
Researchers analyzed response from 605 nurses to a questionnaire on decision regret. Nurses who reported more fatigue, daytime sleepiness, worse sleep quality and less intershift recovery were more likely to experience decision regret.

Decision regret was also slightly more likely among male nurses, those working 12-hour shifts and those with low clinical-decision satisfaction.
The study concluded nurses with impairments due to sleep deprivation are more likely to report decision regret.
