The patient advocacy group Sepsis Alliance has named two clinicians, a sepsis survivor, a sepsis advocate and one health system as its 2016 Sepsis Heroes.
This is the fifth year Sepsis Alliance has named Sepsis Heroes. This year's Sepsis Heroes are:
- Tom Ahrens, PhD. Dr. Ahrens is a nurse educator who teaches nurses about sepsis best practices.
- Lisa Bartlett. Ms. Bartlett is a sepsis advocate who, after the death of her husband to sepsis, started community awareness events in Illinois and Colorado.
- Martin Doerfler, MD, associate CMO of Great Neck, N.Y.-based Northwell Health. Dr. Doerfler is a leading advocate for sepsis awareness and education.
- Kennedy Health System (Philadelphia). This system has demonstrated systemwide commitment to improving sepsis treatment and outcomes.
- Hillary Spangler. Ms. Spangler is a sepsis survivor who went on to go to medical school and be a sepsis education and awareness advocate.
"From healthcare professionals to survivors and family members of those who have been stricken by sepsis, their dedication to raising sepsis awareness and helping save others is unparalleled," said Thomas Heymann, executive director of Sepsis Alliance.
The five newest Sepsis Heroes will be honored at the Sepsis Heroes gala on Sept. 15 in New York City.
