U.S. Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) said it is possible to have a thriving and innovative device industry while maintaining patient safety at the University of Minnesota's Design of Medical Devices Conference, according to a Star Tribune report.
Although Sen. Franken admitted the convergence of patient safety and device innovation involves "pretty complex stuff," he said manufacturers and federal regulators should be able to meet halfway in order to push needed medical devices through the approval process more quickly, according to the report.
Sen. Franken has already proposed legislation that would, among other things, allow the FDA to consult and work with experts from the medical device industry in reviewing new medical devices. That proposal is part of a larger bill currently being considered in the Senate.
