On March 18, a student at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J., was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis, according to The Daily Targum.
"Rutgers Health Services is coordinating its response with local, regional and state health officials...those who had close contact with the student are being notified so they can receive antibiotics as a preventative measure," wrote Melodee Lasky, MD, assistant vice chancellor for health and wellness, in an email addressed to the Rutgers community, according to the Targum.
The New Jersey Department of Health is reportedly running tests to discern the specific type of bacteria that incited the infection.
The identity of the student remains undisclosed.
A freshman at Yale University in New Haven, Conn., was recently hospitalized for what appears to be the recurrence of an initial meningitis infection for which they were previously treated and discharged.
