Rush reports 95% 1-year survival rate for liver transplant patients

Chicago-based Rush University Medical Center demonstrated high one-year transplant survival rates for kidney and liver recipients, according to transplant data the Scientific Registry of Transplant Recipients released Oct. 9.

Here are three things to know:

1. Every six months, SRTR releases data on U.S. organ transplant activity for prospective patients, regulatory agencies and insurers. The most recent data covers transplant outcomes for surgeries performed between Jan. 1, 2015, and June 30, 2017.

2. Rush University Medical Center's liver transplant program has a one-year patient survival rate of 95.4 percent, and its deceased donor kidney program has a 96.9 percent survival rate , according to Martin Hertl, MD, director of the Rush Solid Organ Transplant Program and the hospital's section chief of transplant surgery.

"While these rates make Rush's program unique to Chicago and among the nation's best, we continually seek improvement in our plans and in how we care for our patients," Dr. Hertl, said in a press release. "The success we found is in having a multidisciplinary team to collaborate on every aspect of a patient’s care."

3. Rush University Medical Center has also maintained a one-year organ and patient survival rate of 100 percent for its living donor kidney transplant program since 2014, according to the data.

"It's very difficult to reduce something that is as complicated as transplant to a grade or score; but when using the survival rate to measure the success of the program, it shows that Rush is one of the best in the nation," Nancy Reau, MD, chief of hepatology at Rush and associate director of the Rush Solid Organ Transplant Program, said in the press release.
