Report: U.S. Needs to Make Prevention a Priority in Health Strategy

Prevention must become a bigger priority in U.S. healthcare to improve citizens' health and lower costs, according to a new report by Trust for America's Health.

The report, "A Healthier America 2013: Strategies to Move from Sick Care to Health Care in Four Years," includes a series of recommendations to reach two overall goals in the move toward preventive health:

1. Advance the nation's public health system. Policymakers should establish a set of core capabilities, restructure federal public health programs and ensure all public health departments receive adequate funding.

2. Build partnerships within and outside of the health field. Public health departments should partner with public and private payors, healthcare providers and sectors beyond the healthcare system, such as education and transportation.

The report also includes case studies demonstrating TFAH's recommendations for making preventive care a larger priority as well as suggestions for 10 key public health issues, including the obesity epidemic.
