Reduced Wait Times Drives Patients to Dallas Hospital's ER

Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas is expecting to see 200,000 ER visits this year, one-third more than expected, driven in part by a 25 percent reduction in ER bed wait times, according to The Dallas Morning News and the hospital.

The hospital's median boarding time — the time from inpatient bed request to physical departure — decreased by 90 minutes (25 percent reduction) and the average time to admission orders decreased 135 minutes (64 percent reduction).

Parkland Memorial is using what is describes as a "rapid admission protocol," which took its admission process from 50 steps to 10.

The hospital has also simplified physician roles in the process, required direct communication between caregivers and clarified staff responsibilities.
