Members of a Congolese rebel group killed 15 civilians and kidnapped a dozen children from an Ebola treatment center in the city of Beni Oct. 20. Two medical workers were also killed in a separate attack on the same day, according to NPR.
The health workers, part of Congo's Rapid Intervention Medical Unit, were fatally shot when guarding an entry point set up in eastern Congo to control the virus' spread. They are believed to be the first health workers killed by rebels in the current Ebola outbreak. One of the Congo's health ministers called Oct. 20 a "dark day" for first responders and health officials trying to control the outbreak, according to NPR. The World Health Organization met Oct. 17 to discuss the Ebola outbreak and ruled it is not yet an international emergency.
There have been 200 confirmed Ebola cases and 117 deaths linked to the outbreak as of Oct. 19.
