Provena United Samaritans Medical Center in Danville, Ill., has passed a state health department inspection, meaning it can keep its Medicare status, according to a Commercial-News report.
The Provena hospital was in danger of losing its Medicare status after a patient recently suffered burns during surgery. According to the report, the patient was undergoing port and catheter placement surgery when the tool used for cauterization began sparking. The sparks, in combination with increased oxygen given to the patient during her procedure, caused a fire to catch on an overhead drape. The fire caused first-degree burns to the patient's face, neck and chest.
The hospital soon after received a notice from HHS stating its noncompliance to Medicare requirements endangered its participation in the Medicare program. Earlier this week, state health department inspectors re-surveyed the hospital and found it in compliance. According to the report, Provena had implemented a number of corrective actions, including new policies for equipment and oxygen levels and replacing linens with inflammable gel packs.
