Patient safety tool: U-M Health System toolkit to educate seniors about hand hygiene

Researchers from the University of Michigan Health System in Ann Arbor have developed a toolkit to guide post-acute care facilities on how to train employees to control infections.

The toolkit, which can also be adapted for a patient audience, was developed by Lona Mody, MD, the associate chief for clinical and translational research at the U-M Geriatrics Center and a research scientist at the Ann Arbor VA Geriatrics Research Education and Clinical Center. Dr. Mody recently led a study at U-M that revealed one in four seniors transfer multidrug-resistant organisms on their hands from hospitals to PAC facilities.

The targeted infection prevention toolkit includes:

  • Educational posters about hand hygiene
  • Educational modules and trivia questions about hand hygiene
  • Instructions for an on-site infection preventionist to ensure availability of hand hygiene products, including alcohol gel for personal use
