Patient safety tool: AMGA compendium on best practices for rheumatoid arthritis patients

The AMGA Foundation, a nonprofit that helps medical groups and other organized systems to consistently improve health and healthcare, has published a compendium of case studies and best practices for managing patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

The "Best Practices in Managing Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis Compendium" includes case studies from numerous medical groups, independent practice associations, academic practices and integrated delivery systems.

"The commitment of these organizations and the outcomes they have been able to achieve for patients with RA through this collaborative will be a model for other organizations that are trying to improve the health of people with chronic conditions," said Jerry Penso, MD, president of the AMGA Foundation and chief medical and quality officer of AMGA.

Some best practices outlined in the compendium include:

  • Diagnosing RA early
  • Standardizing the process for capturing the functional and disease assessments
  • Properly prescribing and managing disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs
  • Implementing ways to evaluate and track the effects of treatment efforts
  • Reducing incorrect RA diagnoses within health systems
  • Standardizing the referral process from primary care to specialist
