Patient safety effort of 100+ children's hospitals expands to incorporate employee safety

Children's Hospitals' Solutions for Patient Safety — a collaborative safety effort involving more than 100 children's hospitals — is expanding its safety initiatives to incorporate worker safety.

The efforts of the SPS network have prevented serious harm from occurring in nearly 6,000 pediatric patients and produced estimated savings of more than $109 million. The network relies on open communication between the hospitals regarding best safety practices. All hospitals in the network are dedicated to preventing readmissions, serious safety events and hospital acquired conditions like pressure ulcers and CAUTIs.

Marcy L. Doderer, president and CEO of Arkansas Children's Hospital in Little Rock and vice chair of SPS said, "What makes this effort truly unique — and transformational — is that the children's hospitals in the United States and Canada that are part of SPS have chosen a new way to improve safety. They have put aside competition to work together — sharing what works, what doesn't and keeping kids safe while in our care."

The expansive SPS initiative will reportedly be the first employee safety campaign of this collaborative magnitude in healthcare.

Michael Fisher, president and CEO of Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and chair of SPS, said, "Common sense suggests and strong research shows that worker safety goes hand-in-hand with patient safety. In fact, working toward zero harm for employees actually strengthens our ability to bring zero harm to patients."
