Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute Offers $96M in Funding

The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute made its first four primary research funding announcements to support comparative clinical effectiveness research that will help patients and caregivers make better-informed healthcare decisions.

Under these announcements, PCORI will provide up to $96 million to address the first four areas of focus outlined in its National Priorities for Research and Research Agenda (pdf):

•    Assessment of prevention, diagnosis and treatment options. Projects in this area will address critical decisions that patients, their caregivers and clinicians face with too little information.

•    Improving healthcare systems. Projects in this area will address critical decisions that face healthcare systems, the patients and caregivers who rely on them and the clinicians who work within them.

•    Communication and dissemination. Projects in this area will address critical elements in the communication and dissemination process among patients, their caregivers and clinicians.

•    Addressing disparities. Projects in this area will inform the choice of strategies to eliminate disparities.

Projects must involve patients and stakeholders in research teams to ensure the interventions meet patients' needs. PCORI will evaluate applications using eight review criteria, including the patient-centeredness of the research question and the efficient use of research resources.

This summer, PCORI will make a fifth funding announcement that will provide up to $24 million for projects addressing PCORI's fifth area of focus — accelerating patient-centered and methodological research.
