'Patient-as-Observer' Approach to Hand Hygiene Sees Almost Complete Adherence

Hand hygiene adherence reached an almost perfect level in a pilot study requiring patients to become active players in their healthcare treatments, according to a study in the American Journal of Infection Control.

Researchers asked patients to observe the hand hygiene activities of their physicians and report what they saw on patient survey cards. Researchers found hand hygiene compliance reached 96.8 percent when patients were tracking physician hand hygiene adherence.

Researchers suggest having patients observe hand hygiene protocol and offering their commentary may be a viable solution to permanently improving hand hygiene adherence.
