Organ Procurement and Transplant Network puts Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin's transplant program on probation

The Organ Procurement and Transplant Network, operated by the United Network for Organ Sharing, placed Froedtert and the Medical College of Wisconsin's transplant program on probation due to an organ allocation concern, according to the Milwaukee Biz Times.

The standards committee interviewed staff at the hospital over quality concerns with abdominal organ transplant services in January and recently decided the program needed to address patient safety issues.

The healthcare organization attributes the disciplinary action to "a single, complex transplant case," according to the report, which cited a statement from the hospital.

The OPTN's probation designation means that a member is "executing a corrective action plan for noncompliance with OPTN policies or bylaws, or a serious lapse in patient safety or quality of care." The probation status will stand for at least 12 months, during which the hospital will have site visits by the United Network for Organ Sharing, according to the report. The hospital can continue performing transplants during probation but it must install a corrective action plan.

Nalissa Winenke, media relations associate for Froedtert and the Medical College of Wisconsin, told the Milwaukee Biz Times the hospital is working with UNOS "to address their concern and hope probation will be lifted as soon as possible."
