On Monday, the Oklahoma State Department of Health updated the number of mumps cases in the state associated with a recent outbreak to 81, marking an 11 case increase since Oct. 10.
State health officials are working with schools and healthcare providers to identify infected individuals and exclude said persons from childcare centers, schools and workplaces during the timeframe in which they are contagious.
The mumps are best known for painful, swollen salivary glands that cause puffy cheeks and swollen jaw. It is a highly communicable disease transmitted by person-to-person contact and is typically accompanied by initial symptoms such as fever, headache, muscle aches, tiredness and loss of appetite.
Recently, a renascent outbreak of the mumps has infected more than 500 people in Arkansas.
