Nurse innovators largely absent from leadership positions, survey finds

Most business and clinical leaders value nurses' innovation and clinical skills, but haven't given them leadership positions yet, according to a survey from The BDO Center for Healthcare Excellence & Innovation and the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing in Philadelphia.

For the study, BDO and Penn Nursing surveyed 104 clinical leaders and 172 industry business leaders about the future of nursing innovation.

Four survey findings:

1. Only 31 percent of clinical leaders said they had a designated nursing leader whose primary focus is innovation.

2. Forty-four percent of business leaders said their C-suite did not include anyone with a nursing background.

3. Eighty-one percent of clinical leaders said including nurses as decision-makers on strategic planning teams will be crucial for healthcare organizations by 2025.

4. More than half (57 percent) of business leaders said advanced leadership for nurse innovators will also be important within their organization by 2025.
