Northwell Health and the system's children's hospital — Cohen Children's Medical Center of New York in New Hyde Park — earned 2016 Pinnacle Awards for quality and patient safety from the Healthcare Association of New York State.
Northwell received recognition in the category for a hospital or system with more than 500 beds for their commitment to eliminating the occurrence of catheter-associated urinary tract infections throughout the system's 15 acute care facilities and children's hospital. The program —"Aiming for Zero"— resulted in a 52 percent CAUTI decrease throughout the system. The program also lessened patient exposure to antibiotics.
Cohen Children's was honored in the grouping for hospitals with less than 200 beds. The hospital earned distinction for its safety program led by nurses and physicians aimed at preventing patient harm by conducting daily safety briefings and fostering a culture of teamwork and communication. The hospital's "Commit to Zero" program led to a 75 percent decrease in serious safety events.
