North Shore-LIJ releases Ebola preparedness manual for providers, governments

Great Neck, N.Y.-based North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System has published its Ebola Virus Disease Preparedness Manual that healthcare providers and local governments can use to help in preparedness efforts and learn of best practices.

The manual covers topics including emergency management structure, clinical guidelines, staff education and training, internal and external communication and internal evaluation tools, among others.

North Shore-LIJ is one of eight hospitals and health systems in New York State designated as an Ebola treatment center.

Last week, the health system announced plans to develop a biological containment unit to bolster its preparedness and response to infectious disease outbreaks.

"While experts agree that the chance of a widespread Ebola outbreak in the U.S. and the New York area is unlikely, it's imperative that caregivers remain vigilant to stop the spread of the infection," said Michael Dowling, president and CEO of North Shore-LIJ.
