New Jersey DOH launches infection control campaign after adenovirus outbreak

New Jersey health officials will launch an infection control and prevention campaign at three New Jersey pediatric specialty hospitals that care for medically fragile patients, similar to those affected by a recent adenovirus outbreak at a rehabilitation center in the state, according to NJ Spotlight.

The education and training campaign will emphasize "staff and administrators at (the three) similar facilities who take care of these medically fragile children to ensure infection control protocols are followed," Shereef Elnahal, MD, New Jersey's department of health commissioner, told NJ Spotlight.

As of Oct. 25, Wanaque (N.J.) Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation reported 19 confirmed adenovirus infections and seven patients death linked to the outbreak.

Rep. Holly Schepisi, R-Passaic County, also pledged to introduce legislation to require healthcare facilities like Wanaque to notify family members within 24 hours of an infection outbreak or health emergency involving patients.
