Nebraska Medical Center treats second Ebola patient

The American journalist who contracted Ebola in Liberia has arrived at The Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.

Askoka Mukpo was taken from Liberia to Omaha in an air ambulance Monday, according to a Boston Globe report. A team of about 40 from the hospital will be responsible for his treatment in the hospital's biocontainment unit.

The academic medical center already has experience treating Ebola, as The Nebraska Medical Center successfully treated Richard Sacra, MD, who was discharged from the hospital Sept. 25.

"There is really no substitute for firsthand experience," Brad Britigan, MD, dean of the University of Nebraska College of Medicine, told the Boston Globe. "Having experienced this in one case, it's going to be very helpful."

Dr. Sacra was treated with an experimental drug as well as blood transfusions from another American who survived Ebola. According to the Boston Globe, those options are available for Mr. Mukpo as well.
